Brand & Strategy

What a new business needs from its brand before launch

A logo is one decision in a much bigger launch. Clarify your audience, offer, identity and first campaign before filling a folder with disconnected assets.

Launching a business creates a long list of decisions. The logo is visible, so it often gets attention first. But a designer cannot make an unresolved offer clear simply by choosing a better typeface.

Give the identity something solid to express. You do not need to predict the next decade. You do need a working view of who you want to attract and why they would choose you.

Choose a starting audience

A new business may be able to serve many people. Its first campaign still needs a focus. Describe the customers whose needs you understand, whose problems you can address and whom you can realistically reach.

Write down assumptions as assumptions. If you believe a particular audience will pay for the offer, identify what would help confirm that belief. A brand workshop can organise the thinking; it cannot substitute for every conversation with a potential customer.

Make the offer explainable

Define what the customer receives, what falls outside the scope and how the relationship begins. Consider the alternatives they already have, including doing the work themselves or postponing it.

This gives positioning a practical role. You are deciding which reasons for choosing the business are relevant and credible, rather than trying to claim every positive quality in the category.

Build an identity you can actually use

A useful identity needs to survive the places it will appear. Consider a small profile picture, a proposal cover, a mobile screen and any physical materials your business needs.

A basic brand handbook should explain logo use, colour, typography, image direction and tone of voice. Add realistic examples so someone creating the next piece of communication can make a sensible decision without starting again.

Connect the identity to the first campaign

Agree what you want to introduce, to whom and through which channels. Develop campaign ideas around that assignment. A limited launch budget benefits from priorities and a clear scope.

Separate ideas from production and media spend. Knowing what is included prevents a promising concept from being mistaken for a fully delivered campaign.

Leave room to learn

Define what should remain consistent and what you will review after talking to customers. Your core offer may need refinement; individual campaign messages may need testing. Record those decisions so changes are deliberate.
