Convenience or discovery? Design for the customer’s mission

Some customers need speed and certainty. Others want inspiration. Design the experience around the task that brought them to you.

A customer arriving with a specific task needs a different experience from someone exploring possibilities. Asking both to follow the same journey can make the first impatient and leave the second uninspired.

Help a decided customer complete the task

Someone who already knows the service or product they need should be able to find it, understand the relevant details and act. Clear labels, dependable information and a proportionate next step matter more than adding another layer of storytelling.

On a service website, this might mean an obvious route to discuss a brief. In a store, it might mean understandable signage and accurate availability. Check the entire journey, including the moment when the visitor needs assistance.

Give an exploring customer something to discover

A person comparing approaches needs useful context. Explain why choices differ, demonstrate the experience and provide examples that genuinely help them evaluate it. Inspiration works better when it reveals a possibility than when it simply adds decoration.

For a complex offer, a guided explanation can help someone understand where to begin. A physical experience may benefit from a demonstration or conversation. A digital experience might offer a clear comparison or a practical introduction to the process.

Connect the touchpoints

The promise made online should match what happens next. If a page invites someone to an experience, make access and expectations clear. If a visitor contacts the team after reading a guide, the response should recognise the question that guide helped them formulate.

Do not assume that one customer always has the same mission. Someone may explore on the first visit and return later with a specific decision. Provide recognisable routes for both without forcing everyone through every piece of content.
