A newsletter needs a reason to exist beyond “it is Friday”

Give your newsletter a clear reader promise so each edition earns attention beyond its place in the calendar.

A publishing schedule helps your team organise its work. It does not explain why anyone should read the email.

Give the newsletter a reader promise. Perhaps each edition answers one practical customer question, shares a considered point of view or helps someone make a specific decision. That promise should be narrow enough that a subscriber knows what they are signing up for.

Now look at the latest issue. Is the opening useful, or does it begin with a long update about how busy your company has been? Company news can matter, but the reader needs a connection to their own interests.

Build the email around one primary idea. Supporting links can add depth, but an inbox full of unrelated announcements asks the recipient to do the editorial work.

The subject line should represent what is inside. Curiosity is useful; disappointment is not. Make the sender recognisable and the route to leaving the list straightforward.

Measure more than whether an email was opened. Look for relevant clicks, replies and subsequent conversations, while recognising that measurement tools cannot capture every interaction accurately.

A sustainable newsletter is a repeatable exchange: you bring something worth reading; the subscriber chooses to keep paying attention.

Need help finding that editorial promise? We can help your email programme become a useful part of your marketing instead of another deadline on the calendar.
